General Laborer

The General Laborer is a critical support role within the shop, responsible for performing a variety of tasks to ensure the smooth and efficient operation of the production floor. This position focuses on material handling, shop organization, equipment support, and general labor to assist skilled fabricators, welders, and machinists. The ideal candidate is safety-conscious, reliable, and possesses a strong work ethic.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Material Handling

  • Load, unload, and move raw materials (metal sheets, tubing, stainless steel, etc.) and finished parts.
  • Transport materials between workstations, storage areas, and loading docks.
  • Use pallet jacks, forklifts, and other equipment safely.

Fabrication Support

  • Assist welders and fabricators with positioning, holding, and clamping parts.
  • Prepare materials by cutting, grinding, drilling, sanding, blasting, and cleaning welds.
  • Feed materials into machines and remove finished parts.

Equipment & Machine Assistance

  • Assist with basic setup and cleanup of fabrication equipment (saws, shears, press brakes, rollers).
  • Perform simple preventative maintenance such as cleaning and lubrication.
  • Operate basic fabrication equipment after training.

Shop Organization

  • Keep the shop clean and organized (sweeping, removing scrap metal, dust, and debris).
  • Maintain organized storage areas, workstations, and tool areas.
  • Dispose of scrap and waste materials properly.

Quality & Safety

  • Follow all company safety rules and OSHA guidelines.
  • Wear required PPE (safety glasses, steel-toe boots, hearing protection, gloves).
  • Perform visual inspections and basic measurements to ensure parts meet specifications.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Assist with inventory counts and stock organization.
  • Perform minor repairs on shop tools and fixtures.
  • Follow written and verbal instructions from supervisors.
  • Perform other duties as needed.

Qualifications & Requirements

Education & Experience:

  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent preferred.

  • Previous experience in a manufacturing, warehouse, construction, or fabrication environment is a plus, but not required. Willingness to learn is essential.

  • Forklift certification is a plus, or ability to obtain certification.

Skills & Abilities:

  • Physical Stamina & Strength: Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including frequent lifting (up to 50 lbs.), carrying, pushing, pulling, bending, and standing for extended periods.

  • Mechanical Aptitude: Basic understanding of tools and machinery.

  • Teamwork: Ability to work effectively as part of a team and take direction well.

  • Initiative: Self-motivated with a strong work ethic and attention to detail.

  • Safety-Minded: A paramount commitment to working safely.

  • Reliability: Punctual, dependable, and able to work scheduled hours, which may include overtime as needed.
